The facial rejuvenation (botulinum toxin type A, dermal fillers, etc) courses offered at PTIFA are not only approved by the ADA+C, but were also used by the board establish the Standard of Practice for facial aesthetic therapies and adjunctive procedures in the dental practice. The standard is a tiered and gated system which helps dentists achieve a high-level of clinical efficiency and proficiency prior to progressing through the levels.
Alberta Dentists: Become a Certified Botulinum Toxin Provider
In order to become a certified botulinum toxin type A (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) provider, Alberta dentists are required at a minimum, to complete the following educational levels with PTIFA: Level 1 and Level 2. After receiving their ADA+C certificate, they will be able to offer cosmetic treatment in upper face, as well as therapeutic treatment for bruxism.
Please note that PTIFA’s Level 1 includes 16 hours of online advanced anatomy learning. In order to meet the ADA+C’s Level 1 requirements, participants must complete PTIFA’s online Level 1, as well as the hands-on cadaver program (Level 1B- Hands-on Cadaver) – held concurrently with the Level 2 course. Please contact us if you would prefer to complete the Level 1B – Hands-on Cadaver course without registering for Level 2.
Level 2 Prerequisite
In order to attend Level 2, all Alberta dentists must have successfully completed the Level 1 course with PTIFA. Please note that Alberta dentists must provide their PTIFA educational course certificate to the ADA+C, and receive an ADA+C certificate prior to offering botulinum toxin (aka Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) services to patients.
Level 3 Prerequisites
In order to attend Level 3, all Alberta dentists must:
- have successfully completed Level 2
- have 20 botulinum toxin cases documented using the Roberts Facial Rejuvenation Photography™ series
- have waited at least one year from the date found on their ADA+C Level 2 course certificate
- submitted the ADA+C Level 3 application form (found in the members-only section of the online Botox® Study Club)
Level 4 Prerequisites
**Please note the following update:
As of Feb 9, 2016 from the Alberta Dental Association + College
The Facial Esthetic Therapies and Adjunctive Procedures (FETAP) Committee and the Council of the ADA+C have decided that further review of teaching programs for dermal fillers is required. This review will not be completed before January 1, 2017. As such, dentists will not be authorized to undertake Level 4a (dermal filler) training, and no Level 4 continuing education programs will be reviewed during this period. The FETAP Committee will be applying more specific restrictions for these treatments and structuring dermal filler educational requirements more similarly to those of neuromodulators. A draft of the revisions will be made available for review and comment this summer.
The ADA+C defines a case as 20 different, documented patients. Repeat treatments on one patient do not count towards the total. Please contact the college for additional information.
