Botox® Training for Toronto and Ontario Dentists

Ontario dentists may incorporate botulinum toxin into their practice for procedures that fall within the scope of dentistry, provided they have the appropriate education, training and competence.

For dentists interested in using botulinum toxin extra-orally for therapeutic purposes—such as the management of certain temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), bruxism, myofascial pain, and other oral-facial conditions—the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) expects dentists to pursue more extensive training. Appropriate education helps dentists develop the knowledge and clinical skills needed to deliver safe, predictable outcomes in therapeutic care.

At PTIFAT, our progressive, anatomy-based Botox® training is designed to provide dentists with comprehensive education in anatomy, diagnosis, case selection, therapeutic treatment planning, injection techniques and patient safety.

Therapeutic Botox: A Powerful Tool in Dentistry

Botulinum toxin can play an important role in the management of certain muscular conditions within the scope of dentistry.

The RCDSO’s 2023 Diagnosis and Management of Temporomandibular Disorders Standard of Practice recognizes that botulinum toxin has value in the management of myalgia, particularly when related to myospasm or muscle hyperactivity and when traditional treatment methods have failed.

With appropriate training and competence, Ontario dentists may use botulinum toxin for therapeutic purposes related to conditions such as:

  • Temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
  • Bruxism and muscle hyperactivity
  • Myalgia and myofascial pain
  • Headache secondary to TMD
  • Other appropriate oral-facial conditions within the scope of dentistry

Botulinum toxin should be considered as part of a comprehensive, diagnosis-based approach to patient care, with appropriate consideration given to conservative treatment options.

Understanding Botox® Scope of Practice in Ontario

Ontario’s guidelines can be summarized into several important principles for dentists considering botulinum toxin treatment:

  • Intra-oral botulinum toxin: Ontario dentists who are appropriately trained and competent may provide botulinum toxin treatment intra-orally for either therapeutic or cosmetic purposes.
  • Extra-oral botulinum toxin: Ontario dentists may provide extra-oral botulinum toxin treatment for therapeutic purposes when the treatment falls within the scope of dentistry.
  • Extra-oral cosmetic botulinum toxin: Extra-oral botulinum toxin injections performed for cosmetic purposes are not within the scope of practice of dentistry in Ontario.
  • Dermal filler: Appropriately trained and competent Ontario dentists may provide dermal filler treatment within the permitted oral-facial scope, including lip enhancement within the vermilion/oral-facial complex.

Most importantly, dentists who wish to provide botulinum toxin extra-orally for therapeutic purposes, including the management of certain TMDs and other oral-facial conditions, are expected to pursue more extensive training. View full Ontario Botox guidelines here.

Why More Extensive Training Matters

Therapeutic botulinum toxin treatment involves much more than learning where to inject.

Effective treatment requires a strong understanding of head and neck anatomy, diagnosis, muscle function, appropriate case selection, dosing, treatment planning, injection technique, patient assessment and the prevention and management of complications.

This is why PTIFAT’s Botox® education follows a progressive training pathway rather than a short introductory injection course.

Dentists begin by developing a strong foundation in anatomy and theory before progressing into hands-on clinical training and more advanced therapeutic applications.

The goal is not simply to teach dentists how to inject—it is to develop the knowledge and clinical competency required to assess, treatment plan and safely manage therapeutic cases within their scope of practice.

EMG-Assisted Therapeutic Botulinum Toxin: Advanced Functional Assessment

Moving beyond traditional palpation alone, advanced clinical protocols incorporate surface electromyography (EMG) to complement clinical evaluations. This supportive technique allows practitioners to:

  • Assess localized muscle hyperactivity and asymmetry contributing to pain
  • Correlate electrophysiological data with clinical findings
  • Track muscle relaxation and functional recovery over time
  • Guide ongoing management based on objective, repeatable feedback

The result? Predictable, reproducible outcomes that enhance patient care and support clinical excellence in therapeutic management.

Lip Filler Within the Ontario Dental Scope

Ontario dentists who are appropriately trained and competent may also provide dermal filler treatment within the permitted oral-facial scope, including lip enhancement within the vermilion/oral-facial complex.

PTIFAT’s Level 4 Dermal Filler training focuses on:

  • Lip anatomy and vascular safety
  • Natural enhancement and proportion
  • Injection techniques and complication prevention
  • Patient assessment and treatment planning
  • Patient communication and informed consent

This allows dentists to develop additional injectable skills while remaining within their professional scope of practice.

Why Choose PTIFAT for Botox® & Filler Training?

PTIFAT (Pacific Training Institute for Facial Aesthetics & Therapeutics) provides progressive, anatomy-based education in facial injectables for dental and medical professionals.

Dr. Warren Roberts was hired as a consultant to help develop the FETAP Standard (Facial Esthetic Therapies & Adjunctive Procedures), which emphasizes:

  • Advanced knowledge of head and neck anatomy
  • Diagnosis and appropriate case selection
  • Therapeutic treatment planning
  • Hands-on clinical education and mentorship
  • Patient safety and complication management
  • Evidence-informed treatment

PTIFAT’s progressive Level 1–4 curriculum allows dentists to build their knowledge and clinical skills over multiple levels of education rather than relying on a short introductory course.

For Ontario dentists in particular, this comprehensive approach is important: the RCDSO specifically states that dentists wishing to use botulinum toxin extra-orally for therapeutic purposes, including for certain TMDs and other oral-facial conditions, are expected to pursue more extensive training.
