New Brunswick has formally approved Botox® and dermal fillers for dentists
The New Brunswick Dental Society (NBDS) has established a Standards of Practice for the Use of Neuromodulators and Dermal Fillers. Dentists must be registered on the NBDS public registry for the specific treatment rosters before providing any of these services.
Providing these treatments without the appropriate NBDS registration is not permitted and may constitute professional misconduct.
The New Brunswick roster system
New Brunswick uses a roster-based authorization model, similar to Manitoba:
- Section I — Neuromodulators for Myofascial Pain & Parafunction
- Management of bruxism (temporalis and masseter muscles)
- Management of headaches, migraines, and temporomandibular disorders
- Section II — Neuromodulators for Other Uses
- Upper face: frontalis, glabellar complex, procerus, corrugators supercilii, orbicularis oculi
- Mid-face, lower face, and neck: superficial muscles in these areas
- Section III — Dermal Fillers
- Nasolabial fold, lip augmentation, gingival augmentation, malar enhancement, nasojugal groove, glabellar, laugh and marionette lines
- Note: non-resorbable fillers are restricted to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
Key requirements
- Patient must be a patient of record within the dentist’s own dental practice
- Treatment must occur in a clinical dental setting — not in spas, salons, fairs, or private residences
- Appropriate antidotes must be present when performing injections
- Dentist must maintain continuity of care and emergency coverage outside office hours
The separate log requirement — unique to New Brunswick
New Brunswick is one of two provinces requiring a separate contemporaneous treatment log in addition to the patient chart. This log must include:
- Patient name
- Purpose of treatment
- Neuromodulator type and dosage used
- For dermal fillers: filler type, concentration, and specific anatomical locations administered
This log must be available to the NBDS Registrar at any time upon request.

Meeting the NBDS’s documentation requirements requires a consistent, reliable system from day one.
PTIFAT recommends Facetec as the preferred tool for clinical photography and patient documentation. Designed specifically for dentists, Facetec streamlines photo capture, patient records, and case documentation, making it easier to maintain the standards required by the NBDS.
Learn more about FacetecContinuing competence
Dentists must complete a DRA-recognized course specific to neuromodulators or dermal fillers in each continuing education cycle, and maintain evidence of continuing competency available to the Registrar upon request.
PTIFAT is an accredited education provider
The NBDS requires dentists to complete training through a college-approved institution at each level. PTIFAT is an accredited educational provider and our programs are specifically designed to meet and exceed the New Brunswick Standard of Practice.
It is the dentist’s responsibility to confirm that any training program they enroll in is approved by their college before beginning.
