Saskatchewan has formally approved Botox® for dentists

The College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CDSS) has established a formal Standard of Practice for Advanced Facial Esthetic Therapies, covering the administration of neuromodulators such as Botulinum Toxin Type A for both therapeutic and aesthetic indications.

Dentists and dental specialists in Saskatchewan may offer these treatments — but only after completing CDSS-approved training at each required level and obtaining the corresponding certificate from the College.

Providing these services without the appropriate CDSS certificate, regardless of any other credentials or training completed, is not permitted and may constitute unprofessional conduct.

Note on dermal fillers: As of the date of this publication, dermal fillers have not been formally approved for dentists in Saskatchewan under a CDSS Standard of Practice. Dentists are advised to contact the CDSS directly before offering any dermal filler treatments.

The multi-level certification pathway for Botox

The CDSS uses a structured, gated training model. Dentists must complete each level in sequence before advancing to the next.

  • Level 1 — Applied Anatomy Review & Introduction to Neuromodulators
    • A mandatory foundational course covering head and neck anatomy, pharmacology, and injection safety. Level 1 does not authorize patient treatment — it is a prerequisite for all subsequent levels.
  • Level 2 — Basic Neuromodulators: Upper Face & Bruxism
    • Authorizes neuromodulators for the superficial muscles of the upper face (frontalis, glabellar complex, procerus, corrugators supercilii, orbicularis oculi) and for bruxism treatment via the temporalis and masseter muscles.
  • Level 3 — Advanced Neuromodulators: Mid-Face, Lower Face & Neck
    • Advances into mid and lower face and neck regions, including myofascial pain and dysfunction treatment.

Key requirements under the CDSS Standard

Before administering any neuromodulator treatment, Saskatchewan dentists must ensure all of the following:

  • The patient is a patient of record with full documentation, history, and clinical examination
  • A complete dental and medical health history has been completed and the patient is assessed as a suitable candidate
  • Treatment is part of a comprehensive dentofacial or maxillofacial treatment plan
  • Informed consent is obtained and documented, including discussion of risks, benefits, alternatives, and costs
  • The dentist holds the current CDSS certificate for the level of treatment being provided

Botox documentation requirements for Saskatchewan dentists

The CDSS Standard is explicit about records. For cosmetic facial therapy, pre-treatment photographs are mandatory — not optional. Dentists must also document:

  • Specific injection sites with site-specific dose records
  • The neuromodulator product brand, lot number, and expiry date for every case
  • All records must be available for review by the CDSS upon request

Meeting the CDSS’s documentation requirements requires a consistent, reliable system from day one.

PTIFAT recommends Facetec as the preferred tool for clinical photography and patient documentation. Designed specifically for dentists, Facetec streamlines photo capture, patient records, and case documentation, making it easier to build your 20-case portfolio and maintain the standards required by the CDSS.

Where Botox treatment can be provided

Neuromodulator treatments must be provided in a recognized and approved dental facility, on patients of record. Treatment is not permitted in stand-alone or mobile spas, esthetic studios, hair salons, fairs or expositions, or private residences.

PTIFAT is an CDSS-accredited provider

The CDSS requires dentists to complete training through a college-approved institution at each level. PTIFAT is an accredited educational provider on the CDSS approved institutions list, and our programs are specifically designed to meet and exceed the Saskatchewan Standard of Practice.

It is the dentist’s responsibility to confirm that any training program they enroll in is approved by the CDSS before beginning.
